Beer Scoring
The National Beer Scoring System (NBSS) is an easy to use 0-5 point scale that can be accessed via WhatPub. The system was designed to assist CAMRA branches with selecting pubs to go into the Good Beer Guide but we can also use the scores to monitor beer quality and help us when we are considering which pubs/clubs to nominate for awards.
With over 400 pubs & clubs in our area, monitoring every one is a near impossible task. If you are a CAMRA member, you can help by telling us about the quality of the beers in the pubs that you visit.
To submit a score:
- log in to the WhatPub website using your usual CAMRA login details
- go to the page for the pub you want to score
- click on 'Submit Beer Scores' (usually at the top of the page)
- enter a score between 0 and 5 (with 0 = no cask ale available and 5 = perfect), the date of your visit, and the brewery & beer name (these last two are optional)
- click 'Submit Beer Score'.
What do the scores mean?
- 0 = No cask ale available.
- 1 = Poor - beer that is anything from barely drinkable to drinkable with considerable resentment.
- 2 = Average - competently kept and drinkable but doesn’t inspire in any way.
- 3 = Good - Good beer in good form, makes you want to stay for another.
- 4 = Very Good - Excellent beer in excellent condition.
- 5 = Perfect - probably the best you are ever likely to find, you might not give this mark very often
You can also score on the Good Beer Guide app.
